It's hard to believe that Labor Day weekend is already upon us, it feels like we blinked and the summer is over. Pumpkin spice lattes are already being sold. Crazy! If you're like me, I am trying to hold onto that summer feeling at least for one more long weekend.
Summer 2018 will forever be stuck in my mind because it's the summer that I finally got the courage to rock a bikini (or a "fat-kini"as some body positive/ plus size advocates like to call it) and ...shockingly... I shared pictures of the moment on social media and even continued to rock my new bathing suit for the rest of the season.
If you're needing a little extra encouragement to push through self-doubt and be able to be confident for the last weekend of the summer, than keeping reading!
HOLD ON TO THAT LIBERATING FEELING
I decided to debut my bikini look on vacation in sunny San Diego for 4th of July. I figured what better way to do it then on a beach with a bunch of people that I didn't know! This trip was a long time coming, I have been dreaming of a California vacation for some time now, so I wanted to take the opportunity to really make it memorable.
The body positive movement has been such an encouragement and to see so many women my size rocking their bikinis, I felt like it was finally time for me to do the same.
When it finally came time to take off my cover up on the beach, I could feel the butterflies in my stomach and the tears welling up in my eyes. But that inner self love dialogue, that I've been working on for months, kicked in with full force. I wasn't going to let this moment be rocked by tears and self doubt. I took a deep breath and undressed.
It was like jumping into freezing cold water. Once that initial shock of the nerves is through, the water starts to feel comfortable. And that's exactly how it felt. After a few minutes, I focused on how good it felt to have the sun on my skin and how liberating it was not to have to worry about covering up my body.
Then something really crazy happened. I started feeling so confident that I actually let my friend take pictures of me. We had a full-on curvy girl photo shoot on the beach and I captured this amazing summer moment that I can always look back on.
If you want to make Labor Day weekend your 'moment' then dive in head first, my friends. Below are my three pieces of advice on how to finally take the plunge.
1. Find the right suit that makes you feel amazing. I took the time to try on suits at Torrid and purchased two that made me feel amazing. With the summer coming to a close, bathing suits are on sale and Labor Day sales are in full force. This is actually the ideal time to make a bikini purchase.
2. Grab another curvy girlfriend to go with for moral support. I was very lucky to have my friend, Alex Morella, go to the beach in San Diego with me. At that time, she was living there and the plan was to to see the area together. Alex is also a confident curvy girl that has been rocking bikinis for forever, so she was a huge encouragement for me.
3. Just go for it and don't look back. You know the phrase "dance like no one is watching," well that's how you have to approach this moment. Life is way too short not to do the booty call dance at your best friend's wedding and it is certainly way too short to cover up your beautiful body in the sweltering summer heat.
